The spring above your garage door lifts almost all of the dead weight of your entire door. Metal fatigue, friction, stress, and constant tension give a spring a lifespan of around 10,000 cycles.
The math: if two vehicles leave and return at different times of day, that’s around 1,100 cycles a year, not counting weekends or the kids running in and out. That works out to roughly 8 to 9 years before you reach 10,000 cycles. Every door is different and many springs last longer, but if it’s been more than 10 years since your springs were installed, we can replace them before you’re stuck inside when it’s time to go.

If you hear a lot of chattering, it may be a sign of worn rollers. Keeping the hinges tight and secure to the door, plus regular lubrication, helps extend the life of your rollers.
